Oregon Alumni Band Spring Meeting Minutes
May 20, 2007
Laura’s digs

Present: Phil, Lani, Laura, Corianne, Rob, and Monica
Absent: Renee, cruising in Alaska. Monica served as her proxy – heh heh
Meeting called to order: 3:47PM

I. Approval of Past Minutes
Monica moved, Phil seconded to approve the OAB minutes of 12/10/2006.

II. Treasurer’s Report: Lani
• Lani passed out 2005 year end balance sheet and income statement and statements up through May 20, 2007.
• We made a whopping $52.09 profit in 2006.
• Lani will file IRS and state papers with the appropriate parties regarding our name change, business license renewal, etc. There may be $100-$200 expense.
• The Executive Board needs to go to B of A to update OAB’s signature card. Lani, Renee, and Laura will meet at a local B of A in the near future; Corianne can complete hers in Eugene.
• OAB apparently got charged fees for not maintaining a certain minimum balance. Charges will be reversed. Go Lani!

III. Vice President’s Report: Corianne
Not a report, really, but a comment: OMB site had no call on their website for alumni to play at the Spring Scrimmage. Laura felt that it was most likely an innocent oversight. We can ask Erik Wiltshire (OMB director) about it later.

IV. President’s Report: Laura

A. Laura and Lani met with OMB Director Wiltshire in Portland recently. He really wants OAB to be big and happy. Laura reports he understands there are reciprocal benefits to a large and organized alumni band. He recommended the following:

1. Larger OAB presence at pick up games (a bigger deal to him than homecoming).

• Wiltshire does not want to hire a high school band to perform at pick up games.
• Pre-game, he would like OAB in block formation and play (and perhaps sing!) four pieces, the same idea for half-time (4 different songs).
• OMB has a license to put music online for members. Alumni have expressed a desire to practice tunes before we all gather for an event. OAB can link to get it online and will include how to access band music online in the upcoming newsletter.
• OAB and OMB would rehearse together in the morning.
• A few OAB members should be present for check-in.
• A bus will be provided to OMB members from SOM to Autzen, so no parking issues.

2. (Re-) Create a members-only “you pay you play” alumni membership. One fee covers three events: admission to a pick up game, homecoming, and the Pape Jam.

• Membership has to be meaningful, which had been OAB’s struggle.
Benefits:
• OMB saves money by not paying a high school band, reignites the integrity of the alumni band, and can afford to purchase matching shirts for everyone!
• OAB gets more recent grads, we get to march, and enjoy more reciprocity with OMB.

B. Homecoming

Oct 13, 2007
OMB will pay for the Armory for our rehearsal site.
More free parking will be available to our members.

C. OMB Treats

In the past, OAB has purchased treats for OMB and passed out during games. We couldn’t afford to do that last year. Wiltshire suggested that OMB purchase 3rd quarter treats, but give us credit so we can use the funds for something more meaningful: provide a $500 scholarship to one OMB student.

D. Pape Jam

The Garter Bands, OMB members and OAB will provide the tunes as a visually unified front, i.e, we’ll be wearing identical (free) T-shirts.

E. OMB Tradition Reawakening

Wiltshire would really like copies of Kathleen Downey’s historical pieces she wrote for our newsletter. He wants the OMB to have tradition. Swordfish! Flying spoongi! Yo baby…!

F. OAB Membership Dues

Phil moved to make OAB a pay to play organization; seconded by Corianne, approved unanimously...except Monica voted “no” for Renee, cuz she’s not here.

And to get real specific, Phil moved to make the annual membership fee $25 through August 15, $35 beginning at 12:01 am August 16 (mail must be postmarked no later than Aug. 15the for the $25 price). Two-year memberships will not be offered anymore. Seconded by Lani, approved unanimously, except Renee. Why is she so negative?

2007 marks OAB’s 10-year anniversary. Wow! We are old. We are changing the membership rules for the third time. Much discussion on how to present to past, current and future members. Laura will write a letter to be included in the upcoming spring newsletter (mid-June). Renee, Lani and Laura will go through the membership list and address folks who have paid for a two-year membership.

G. Re-establishing OMB Scholarship

When we offered scholarships previously, the percentage of scholarship funds depended on OAB’s prior year’s paid memberships. Corianne moved to offer one $500 scholarship to an OMB member based on our 2006 membership income, with the option to increase the number of scholarships based on 2007 paid OAB memberships. Rob seconded, all approved.

H. Drum Set

Thought we had part of it sold…didn’t. We bought it for $750. Phil moved to give Laura permission to sell it online (craigslist) for no less than $500/set and $150 for the cymbals. Seconded by Lani, all approved, but you-know who…Dang, Rae!

Miscellaneous Business

• Tower of Power will be in the house August 12! Shall we go as a group and invite other groupies?
• Laura’s band will be performing August 25. More TBA.

Meeting adjourned 5:30 pm

Next meeting will be in Salem, sometime in August involving Track Town Pizza.
